  • The extinction ratio (ER) is the ratio of maximum to minimum transmission of a linearly polarized input. When the transmission axis and input polarization are parallel, the transmission is at its maximum; rotate the polarizer by 90° for minimum transmission.

  • High Polarization Efficiency: >99%
  • Extinction Ratio:
    • >100:1 for 400 - 500 nm
    • >1000:1 for 500 - 700 nm
    • >5000:1 for 530 - 690 nm
  • 0.3 mm Thick Dichroic Polarizing Film
  • Custom Sizes of up to 24" x 39" Available (Please Contact Technical Support)

Thorlabs' dichroic film polarizers feature a high polarization efficiency in excess of 99% and are designed for low-power applications. The 0.3 mm thick polyvinyl alcohol dichroic polarizing film sheet can be purchased in a 2" x 2" size. There is a protective film on each surface that must be removed prior to use. We also offer this product with AR-coated windows epoxied on each side in Ø1/2", Ø1", and Ø2" sizes. The polarization axis is marked with an arrow and is aligned to the flat edge of the polarizer with a tolerance of ±2°.

The dichroic polarizing material is designed and optimized for use within the 400 - 700 nm range; performance falls off rapidly to the red of 700 nm. Hence, we do not recommend using this product outside of the specified range. This film polarizer is sensitive to stress when mounting and should be cleaned with compressed air.

Larger sizes of up to 24" x 39" are also available. To order a custom-sized dichroic film polarizer, please contact Tech Support.

Hi, I'm looking for Linear Polarizer sheet(4"x4") with high transmission (>80%) at 405nm wavelength. Is it available here? Please email me.
jbell  (posted 2015-09-03 17:38:47.157)
The transmission is shown as 80% over most of the spectrum. I am measuring more like 40%. Are you certain this is the correct transmission chart? Thanks, John.

Response from Bweh at Thorlabs USA: The transmission curve is correct and it is for a linearly polarized source. I will followup with you via email regarding your observations.

What is the damage threshold? Thanks!
besembeson  (posted 2015-02-26 04:17:55.0)
Response from Bweh at Thorlabs: We have not tested these specifically. But we have tested the economy laminated film polarizers whose values you can use as a guide:

Is there a temperature SPEC available for this product??
jlow  (posted 2014-09-25 09:36:46.0)
Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: The polarizing film is rated for -50°C to 70°C.

What is polarization axis (is it aligned with one of the flat edges, etc, or is it arbitrary)? If it is fixed to an edge, what is the tolerance on that spec (+/- angle)?
jlow  (posted 2014-03-11 08:36:39.0)
Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: The polarization axis is aligned to one of the flat edges and will be marked with an arrow. The tolerance is ±2°.

Is it possible to get this material in a 4x4" size?
jlow  (posted 2013-10-23 10:53:00.0)
Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: We can provide this in 4"x4" size. I will contact you directly for a quote.

Polarizer Selection Guide

Thorlabs offers a diverse range of polarizers, including wire grid, film, calcite, alpha-BBO, rutile, and beamsplitting polarizers. Collectively, our line of wire grid polarizers offers coverage from the visible range to the beginning of the Far-IR range. Our nanoparticle linear film polarizers provide extinction ratios as high as 100 000:1. Alternatively, our other film polarizers offer an affordable solution for polarizing light from the visible to the Near-IR. Next, our beamsplitting polarizers allow for use of the reflected beam, as well as the more completely polarized transmitted beam. Finally, our alpha-BBO (UV), calcite (visible to Near-IR), rutile (Near-IR to Mid-IR), and yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) (Near-IR to Mid-IR) polarizers each offer an exceptional extinction ratio of 100 000:1 within their respective wavelength ranges.

  • Mounted in a protective box, unthreaded ring, or cylinder.
  • Available unmounted or in an SM05-threaded (0.535"-40) mount that indicates the polarization axis.
  • Available unmounted or in an SM1-threaded (1.035"-40) mount that indicates the polarization axis.
  • Available unmounted or mounted in cubes for cage system compatibility.
  • Calcite's transmittance of light near 350 nm is typically around 75% (see Transmission column).
  • Available unmounted or in an unthreaded Ø1/2" housing.
  • The transmission curves for calcite are valid for linearly polarized light with a polarization axis aligned with the mark on the polarizer's housing.
  • The 1064 nm V coating corresponds to a -C26 suffix in the item number.
  • Available unmounted or mounted in a protective box or unthreaded cylinder that indicates the polarization axis.
