OUR HISTORY

We were founded in 1989 in Newton, NJ with a simple mission: make photonics lab equipment more accessible to graduate students and junior professors. Although not the norm at the time, we made it easy for our customers to find and order the parts they needed for their research by publishing our prices, maintaining product inventory, and ensuring fast delivery.

Over the last 35 years, we have grown to be an industry leader with a vast product portfolio to address a variety of photonics needs. Our global footprint has expanded to support customers across the world and in a variety of industries.

Thorlabs is comprised of 22 unique entities across nine countries, with each team focused on designing and manufacturing distinct technologies and serving specific markets. We maintain a portfolio of over 22,000 products and a manufacturing footprint that extends over one million square feet.

Our vertically integrated capabilities enable our engineers to design, prototype, test, and manufacture our catalog in addition to custom solutions to best serve the needs of our customers.
