Illumination Adapters
Thorlabs offers two adapter types to modify the epi-illumination pathway of a Nikon Eclipse Ti Microscope with modules having SM threading or utilizing a cage system. Adapters with a male Nikon bayonet mount allow LED light sources and other collimated illumination sources to connect to the port on the epi-illumination module. The SM1A30 and SM2N1 adapters modify the epi-illumination port exposed by removing the epi-illumination module.

The SM2N3 adapter allows a collimated illumination source to mount onto the lamphouse port of an Eclipse Ti microscope.

Camera Port Adapter
The SM1A44 adapter is designed to allow components with SM1 threading, SM2 threading, or 30 mm cage system compatibility to be mounted to the camera port on a Nikon Eclipse Ti microscope. This adapter is ideal for inserting user-built optical assemblies into the optical path or utilizing our CCD and CMOS cameras.

Nosepiece Adapter
The SM1A53 SM1 Adapter is designed to allow Thorlabs' SM1-threaded components to be threaded onto the Nikon TI-ND6-E, TI-ND6, or TI-N6 Nosepieces, also known as objective turrets, that are typically found in Nikon Eclipse Ti-U, Ti-S, and some Ti-E microscopes.

Trinocular Adapters
The LCPN2 adapter is designed to connect custom widefield viewing and image detection setups to the trinocular port of a Nikon Eclipse Ti microscope. The SM2N2 adapter replaces the lens element on an eyepiece of the microscope trinoculars, allowing custom image detection or viewing setups to be attached to the microscope.

Condenser Adapter
The LCPN1 adapter connects to the condenser holder of a Nikon Eclipse Ti microscope for the attachment of custom light conditioning modules.

Note: Thorlabs does not guarantee compatibility with other industry-standard microscopes not mentioned on this wepage.

Introduction to Microscope Dovetails

Dovetails are used for mechanical mating and optical port alignment of microscope components. Components are connected by inserting one dovetail into another, then tightening one or more locking setscrews on the female dovetail. Dovetails come in two shapes: linear and circular. Linear dovetails allow the mating components to slide before being locked down, providing flexible positioning options while limiting unneeded degrees of freedom. Circular dovetails align optical ports on different components, maintaining a single optical axis with minimal user intervention.

Thorlabs manufactures many components which use dovetails to mate with our own components or those of other manufacturers. To make it easier to identify dovetail compatibility, we have developed a set of dovetail designations. The naming convention of these designations is used only by Thorlabs and not other microscope manufacturers. The table to the right lists all the dovetails Thorlabs makes, along with their key dimensions.

In the case of Thorlabs’ Cerna® microscopes, different dovetail types are used on different sections of the microscope to ensure that only compatible components can be mated. For example, our WFA2002 Epi-Illuminator Module has a male D1N dovetail that mates with the female D1N dovetail on the microscope body's epi-illumination arm, while the CSS2001 XY Microscopy Stage has a female D1Y dovetail that mates with the male D1Y dovetail on the CSA1051 Mounting Arm.

To learn which dovetail type(s) are on a particular component, consult its mechanical drawing, available by clicking on the red Docs icon (Docs Icon) below. For adapters with a female dovetail, the drawing also indicates the size of the hex key needed for the locking setscrew(s). It is important to note that mechanical compatibility does not ensure optical compatibility. Information on optical compatibility is available from Thorlabs' web presentations.

For customers interested in machining their own dovetails, the table to the right gives the outer diameter and angle (as defined by the drawings below) of each Thorlabs dovetail designation. However, the dovetail's height must be determined by the user, and for circular dovetails, the user must also determine the inner diameter and bore diameter. These quantities can vary for dovetails of the same type. One can use the intended mating part to verify compatibility.

In order to reduce wear and simplify connections, dovetails are often machined with chamfers, recesses, and other mechanical features. Some examples of these variations are shown by the drawings below.

Is the SM1A30 compatible with Nikon's new Ti2 inverted microscope? Same question also for the other adapters offered for the Nikon Eclipse Ti series. If not compatible, when you expect to release adapters for the Ti2?
nbayconich  (posted 2018-01-05 02:33:42.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The SM1A30 should be compatible with all of the Nikon eclipse Ti series microscopes. If this adapter does not fit properly we can accept a return. I will contact you directly with more information.

We have a Nikon Eclipse Ti-U Microscope. We want to mount a LED on the lamphouse port. So We bought SM2A18 and LED4A5 to replace the lamphouse port, which originally mounted with a D-LH/LC halogen lamp. However, we found that the adapters are not suitable because the port is not a bayonet mount. Is there any other adapter suitable for us to mount LED (M590L3-C5) on the port?
wskopalik  (posted 2016-11-07 07:44:03.0)
This is a response from Wolfgang at Thorlabs. Thank you very much for your inquiry. It is possible that the lamphouse port on your microscope has a design which is incompatible to these adapters. I will contact you directly to discuss this issue in detail and to see if we can offer you a special adapter for your microscope.

I have a lamp design constructed using 60mm cage parts I want to attach to a Nikon Ti Frame. The SM1 hole on the SM1A30 port adapter plate is too small though. Could I get an SM2A30, which removes the 30mm cage spaced holes and upsizes the SM1 hole to SM2, while retaining the 60mm spaced threaded holes for the 60mm cage?

The SM1A44 is designed so that custom-built optical systems or detectors based on Thorlabs' components may be attached to the camera port of Nikon Eclipse Ti Microscopes. The adapter utilizes a male D7N dovetail to securely attach the adapter to the port.

The SM1A44 features internal SM1 (1.035"-40) threading for Ø1" Lens Tubes, external SM2 (2.035"-40) threading for Ø2" Lens Tubes, and 4-40 tapped holes on 30 mm centers for attaching cage system rods. Since Thorlabs' USB CCD and CMOS cameras are provided with a C-Mount to SM1 adapter, our cameras can also be easily integrated into microscope systems for general imaging applications. For demanding imaging applications, our Scientific CCD Cameras can be adapted to SM1 threading using a C-Mount to SM1 adapter (Item # SM1A39), available separately. To achieve proper parfocality, we recommend using a Ø1" lens tube with 2" thread depth (Item # SM1L20) with the Nikon Eclipse Ti microscope and camera port adapter. Alternatively, the SM2 threads can be used for mounting, requiring a Ø2" lens tube with 2" thread depth (Item # SM2L20), as well as an SM2 to SM1 adapter (Item# SM1A2) and an SM1 to C-mount adapter (Item # SM1A9). In addition, an SM1-threaded dust cover (Item # SM1CP2) is included to keep the port closed when not in use.

The SM1A53 Adapter mounted in a Nikon TI-N6 nosepiece.

The SM1A53 SM1-Threaded Adapter is designed to allow Thorlabs' externally SM1-threaded components to be threaded onto Nikon TI-ND6-E, TI-ND6, or TI-N6 Nosepieces, also known as objective turrets, that are commonly found in Nikon Eclipse Ti-U, Ti-S, and some Ti-E microscopes. The adapter features an SM1-threaded central bore and four counterbores that are compatible with the M3 screws that come with the nosepieces. The adapter allows systems built from Thorlabs' optomechanics, such as illumination modules, to be integrated directly with a Nikon nosepiece.

The input port of the nosepiece sits in a small square recess which accepts the SM1A53 adapter and includes four M3 screws installed in the housing. To attach the SM1A53, start by removing these M3 screws from the taps in the nosepiece and setting the washers aside; removing the screws will cause the two main pieces of the nosepiece to detach from each other, so hold them in place as the screws are removed. Place the adapter into the recess so that the counterbores align with the holes, and replace the M3 screws through the counterbores in the SM1A53.
