The difference between the mounting height of the imperial drop-on rail carriage and the imperial rail plate is 0.3" (7.6 mm). For the metric parts, the height difference is 7.5 mm (0.29").
Features
- 1/4"-20 (M6) Tapped Hole Arrays
- Fastened to Rail Side and Positioned by Sliding
Our mounting platforms for 95 mm rails contain a 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped hole matrix that provides mechanical compatibility between 95 mm rails and standard optomechanics.
Drop-On Rail Carriages
The Drop-On Rail Carriages can be dropped into place anywhere along an exposed rail side, can slide along the wings of the rail, and are fastened down by the side-mounted 1/4"-20 (M6) locking screws. Rail carriages with lengths of 1.00" (25.0 mm), 2.00" (50.0 mm), 3.00" (75.0 mm), and 4.00" (100.0 mm) are available.
Rail Plate
The XT95P12(/M) Rail Plate slides along the T-Slots on the rail side and is fastened down by four 1/4"-20 (M6) locking screws. Access to the end of the rail is necessary to insert or remove the plate.
Height Difference
There is a difference in mounting height between the drop-on rail carriages and the rail plates, as shown between the XT95RC4(/M) and XT95P12(/M) to the right. For the imperial parts, this difference in height is 0.30" (7.6 mm). For the metric parts, this difference is 7.5 mm (0.29").
95 mm Rail Construction
Thorlabs' product family for 95 mm rails includes angle adapters, leveling feet, and breadboard mounting adapters. In addition, we manufacture mounting platforms and T-Nuts that provide compatibility with standard optomechanics. Together with size adapters that incorporate 66 mm rails into an XT95 setup, these tools provide a complete family of rigid, versatile building blocks suited for virtually any optomechanical setup.

(posted 2020-01-07 22:51:28.733) Would it be possible to have a cut-out on the underside of the XT95RCX carriages to accommodate a XT95P12 sliding underneath? I imagine making the XT95P12 any thinner would limit the available threads too much.
Would be nice to be able to add rail plates without removing all of the rail carriages to position it. llamb
(posted 2020-01-09 09:31:43.0) Thank you for your inquiry. Such a customization of the XT95RCx rail carriages should be feasible. I will reach out to you directly to discuss a possible custom quote further. user
(posted 2018-11-16 03:50:41.853) As for your XT95P12, you should consider offering your drop-on rail carriages with also counterbored holes, not only tapped holes (that is, both tapped and counterbored on the same carriage). YLohia

(posted 2018-05-30 18:51:47.073) What kind of cantilevered loads can this carriage take if mounted vertically on 95MM rail? llamb
(posted 2018-06-06 11:03:46.0) Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. We do not have a specification for a load capacity, nor a cantilevered load capacity, as this will depend on the user's torque when tightening screws and their specific cantilevered load. However, we have tested these mounting platforms on a vertically mounted 95 mm rail to statically hold >100 lbs. Keep in mind that large loads may over time wear the threads or dovetails of the platforms or rails. High loads will also greatly limit the mobility of translating the platforms. The user should assume their own risk in mounting high loads. user

(posted 2013-05-02 12:43:00.0) Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: The XT95P12 comes with the rail plate, two channel rail nuts, and four 1/4"-20 cap screw. |
- Provide Arrays of Mounting Holes for Components on Side of 95 mm Rail
- Insert or Remove Anywhere Along a 95 mm Rail
- Carriage Can Slide Along 95 mm Rail Prior to Lockdown
- Available in Lengths from 1.00" to 4.00" (25.0 mm to 100.0 mm)
These Drop-On Rail Carriages can clamp to the side of a 95 mm rail by tightening the side-located 1/4"-20 (M6) locking screws. When the locking screw is loosened, the assisted opening mechanism pushes the hinged clamping arm out and provides ample clearance for the dovetail of a 95 mm rail. This allows the carriage to be inserted and removed anywhere along an exposed rail side. Furthermore, while the carriage is clamped onto a rail, the locking screw can be loosened slightly, allowing the carriage to slide along the rail edge and be repositioned in another location.
Each rail carriage has an array of 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped holes for mounting optomechanical components; see the table below for details. For a carriage with a lower profile when mounted on a rail, please consider the XT95P12(/M) Rail Plate below.

- Inserted and Removed at the Rail Ends Only, as Shown to the Right
The XT95P12(/M) Rail Plate consists of a closely packed array of seventeen 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped holes and four 1/4" (M6) counterbores. It fastens to a 95 mm rail by tightening the four included 1/4"-20 (M6) cap screws at the corners. These locking screws are attached to two included T-Nuts that span the length of the rail plate and slide into the T-Slots on the rail side. Click on the image below to the left for details on the clamping mechanism.
Please note that the XT95P12 requires the rail end to be unobstructed for installation. For a platform that can be dropped in anywhere along a rail, please see the Drop-On Rail Carriages above.
