The CBB1(/M) and CBB1RC(/M) Cage System U-Benches provide a tapped mounting surface within a standard 30 mm cage assembly or a Ø1" lens tube setup. A generous supply of 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) and 8-32 (M4 x 0.7) tapped holes provide the flexibility necessary to construct small optical assemblies within the U-Benches that might not otherwise fit within standard cage rods. The U-benches are made from a single piece of aluminum to provide stability and maintain the alignment of the overall system. All U-benches are compatible with a wide range of optical mounting components such as our Ø1" lens tubes, using either SM1-threading (CBB1(/M)) or SM1 flexure mounts (CBB1RC(/M)). Cage rods can be individually locked into place by a side-located M4 x 0.7 locking setscrew with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) hex.
Cage System Overview
The Cage Assembly System provides a convenient way to construct large optomechanical systems with an established line of precision-machined building blocks designed for high flexibility and accurate alignment.
16 mm, 30 mm, and 60 mm Cage System Standards
Thorlabs offers three standards defined by the center-to-center spacing of the cage assembly rods (see Figure 14A). The 16 mm cage, 30 mm cage, and 60 mm cage standards are designed to accommodate Ø1/2", Ø1", and Ø2" optics, respectively. Specialized cage plates that allow smaller optics to be directly inserted into our larger cage systems are also available.
Standard Threads
The flexibility of our Cage Assembly System stems from well-defined mounting and thread standards designed to directly interface with a wide range of specialized products. The three most prevalent thread standards are our SM05 Series (0.535"-40 thread), SM1 Series (1.035"-40 thread), and SM2 Series (2.035"-40 thread), all of which were defined to house the industry's most common optic sizes. Essential building blocks, such as our popular lens tubes, directly interface to these standards.

(posted 2025-09-24 15:59:53.49) Just a typo to be fixed: In the description of the new CBB1RC(/M), "Ø1.20 mm" (twice) should read "Ø1.20 in (30.5 mm)", or perhaps vice versa, "Ø30.5 mm (1.2 in)". It's correct in the AutoCAD drawings. jdelia

(posted 2020-08-26 10:51:05.0) Hello Michael, thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The 4-40 cup-tip setscrews were changed to M4 x 0.7 cone-tip screws. This increases drive size from 0.050” to 5/64” (2 mm). It makes it less likely for users to accidentally strip screw threads in cage plate and also improves resistance to shifting the cage plates when locking/unlocking. Farhad Akhoundi
