Features
Thorlabs' Vytran® Proof Testers apply a set load to a fusion-spliced fiber at a controlled rate in order to test the spliced fiber’s strength. These proof testers feature either a linear proof tester (Item # PTR301) or a rotary proof tester (Item # PTR302). The linear proof tester can perform proof tests with loads up to 20 N (4.5 lbs). The rotary tester can perform proof tests with loads up to 89 N (20 lbs), making it ideal for process qualifications that require very high proof test or tension test levels. Each PTR301 and PTR302 Proof Tester includes a controller for programming and controling the unit. The user can select parameters such as the load, the rate at which the load is applied, and the hold time. Proof and Tension Testing When a fiber is tension tested, the load is typically increased to the breaking point of the fiber. Tension testing sacrifies the fiber sample in order to quantitatively assess the mechanical properties of a batch of optical fiber. Because the load required to break a typical optical fiber is high, a rotary proof tester is often used for tension testing. For these reasons, tension testing is best suited for engineering and development applications. Fiber Block Inserts and Replacement Proof Test Grips The PTR302 Rotary Proof Tester does not use fiber holding blocks, and thus it is unnecessary to purchase any inserts for its operation. It includes one set of proof test grips; replacement proof test grips are sold separately below in packs of 10. Handset Controller GUI InterfaceThe VYT300C handset controller is included with the PTR proof testers. It is also compatible with Vytran large-diameter fiber cleavers as well as Vytran PTR fiber recoaters. One handset controller can be used to configure parameters on multiple fiber processing units in succession. Full instructions for using the handset controller can be found in the manual. The screenshots below highlight key features of the graphical user interface. ![]() Click to Enlarge The initial screen on VYT300C handset controller gives the option to start the proof test process. Exporting or importing a file will require a memory device to be connected to the Program Port of the handset controller.

The PG200 Proof Test Grips are designed as replacements for the Vytran rotary proof testers listed to the right. Each system is sold with a set of these grips installed. Proof test grips may need to be replaced when the fiber slips at high tension levels. After the proof test grips are replaced the system will need to be calibrated; please contact Tech Support for details. Instructions for replacing the proof test grips are provided in each system's manual. ![]() ![]() Click to Enlarge Screenshot of VYT300C Controller When Used with the PTR302 Rotary Proof Tester Compatible Systems
This handset controller is available as an replacement for the included controller. A single handset controller can be used with multiple systems; after configuring parameters to one fiber processing unit, the controller can be disconnected and then connected to a different unit, of the same or a different type, to configure its parameters. The handset controller must be connected via the included cable in order to use it. The controller automatically turns on when the connected system is turned on. Upon startup, the handset controller will always read parameters from the connected system; i.e., the parameters that appear on the screen will always be the parameters that have been uploaded to the connected unit. If the parameters read from the unit match the parameters of the most recently opened file on the handset controller, the screen will display the file name. When used with the proof testers, the controller can edit the level, unit, and time out for the proof tests, as well as the fiber diameter. The main Test screen will show the current tension reading as well as the status of the test, as shown in the screenshot on the right. The suite of tools available through the handset controller includes a proof test history record, which records the target tension and the tension at which a fiber broke. The current log file can also be copied onto an external memory device. The handset controller can open, save, delete, export, and import files containing parameters for compatible systems. Exporting or importing a file will require a memory device to be connected to the Program Port of the handset controller. Instructions for using this controller can be found in the manuals for the compatible Vytran systems. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
