These metrology inspection pin gage kits allow users to measure the diameter of a bore to determine its tolerance. Pin gages are offered in a set of kits ranging from 0.0060" to 0.5005" (0.20 mm to 9.99 mm) in 0.001" (0.02 mm) increments. Each pin is 2" long, with a measured hardness of 60 - 65 HRC and a 10 microinch finish. The pins have a black oxide treatment to protect them from wear. This also serves as a wear indicator. Once the black oxide has started to wear away, the pin is no longer able to accurately check tolerance.
All pins larger than 0.0605" (1.29 mm) come engraved with the diameter they are designed to check, along with a positive or negative engraving to refer to plus or minus tolerances (see Figure 1.1 for an example). Each pin's size is marked in the storage case as well.
The kits that include 55 pins (PGKP1(/M), PGKP2(/M), PGKM1(/M), and PGKM2(/M)) have 10.5" x 8.0" x 3.5" (267 mm x 203 mm x 89 mm) cases, while all other kits have 20.0" x 13.5" x 4.75" (508 mm x 343 mm x 121 mm) cases.
