BLP01 Variable Height P-Post Held by a PF175B Clamping Fork

Features

  • Continuously Variable Height Adjustment
  • Lockable Design
  • Nonmagnetic Stainless Steel Construction
  • Maximum Load Capacity: 500 lbs
  • Adjustment Resolution: 635 µm/rev

The P-Series of Ø1.5" posts has been expanded to include the BLP01 variable height Ø1.5" post. The height of the BLP01 can be varied from 4.24" to 5.74" (108 mm to 146 mm) when the included pedestal base is attached. Removing the pedestal base reduces both the minimum and maximum height of the base by 0.24" (6 mm). Once the post is set to the desired height, it can be locked in place by tightening the knurled locking ring. Both the post and the locking ring have counterbored holes that allow for a 3/16" (5 mm) hex wrench or ball driver to be used as a lever arm in the tightening or loosening process.

The top of the post has a 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped hole that allows the posts to be attached to the bottom of solid or honeycomb breadboards made by Thorlabs with the use of the appropriate set screw, which are available in our screw kits. In addition, a 1/4"-20 to 8-32 or M6 to M4 adapter can be threaded into the top of the post, which allows the post to be used as an extremely rigid support for the vast majority of the optomechanical mounts made by Thorlabs.

The bottom of the post has a pedestal base that allows the post to be secured to the top of a breadboard with the use of a PF85B, PF125B, or PF175B clamping fork. Alternatively, the pedestal can be unscrewed in order to access a 1/4"-20 tapped hole. Using a 1/4"-20 set screw the BLP01 can be attached directly to the top of a tapped breadboard or, for example, be used as a variable height extension to a fixed length P-Series post. When the bottom of the post is fixed to a table or other component, the top of the post must be free to rotate in order to adjust the height. In addition, any components attached to the top of the post will also rotate as the height is adjusted.

Hello, I am wondering about vacuum compatibility of these translating posts. I believe they are all steel construction, but are there lubricants that could result in outgassing? Thank you,

Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The BLP01 post is not rated for use in a vacuum. I have reached out to you directly to discuss whether this may be suitable for your application.

Hi, I have two questions: First, I want to mount something on four BLP01/M pedestals as in the application idea shown above. I understand that in that case, the top part of the pedestal couldn't rotate. But it would still be possible to change height while keeping the breadboard roughly in place by rotating the bottom part of the pedestals, right? Second, the pedestals are about 1 inch (at their minimum height) too tall for my application. I can't find anything shorter that would perform the same function. If I bought these pedestals, would it be possible to just machine off extra material from both the male and female ends in order to get the right height while still being adjustable? Thanks!

Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. For future reference, you may reach out to techsupport@thorlabs.com (973-300-3000) to discuss application questions. You are correct regarding both statements. You can rotate the externally threaded bottom portion of the BLP01(/M) to move it if already fixed to your breadboard, and extra material could be machined off if you have the appropriate equipment on site. I'll reach out to you directly to discuss further as well.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. I'm able to access the webpage for both the product family and the BLP01/M. I have reached out to you directly to determine what the issue could be.

I just wanted to ask you if it is possible to use the BLP01 for hanging a load and what would be the load capacity in this case.
cdaly  (posted 2014-02-27 12:47:05.0)
Response from Chris at Thorlabs: The BLP01 consists of internally and externally threaded posts mated together. The mating thread will support the same load in a compressive or tensile manner. I'd caution against using the clamping forks in this orientation though as they would likely be subject to bending.

Regarding the BLP01, what is the maximum load capacity of this post ?
pbui  (posted 2013-12-10 05:58:39.0)
Response from Phong at Thorlabs: The maximum load capacity of the BLP01 is 500 lbs. This information can be found under the overview for the product.

Thank you for using our web feedback. The BLP01 is essentially a 1.5" post and locking nut with a tapped out thread and a mating post with the corresponding thread. As the length needs to be adjusted for the post assembly, the top and bottom pieces will need to rotate with respect to one another. If the bottom part is fixed with respect to the table, this will mean whatever is mounted to the top will have to rotate with the top portion. A similar product which would keep the mirror from rotating as height were adjusted would be the LJ750.

I was wondering, as you adjust the height on the BLP01, does any attached object spin? For example if I attach a mirror to the stop, will the mirror rotate as I raise and lower the BLP01?

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: Thank you for using our feedback tool. The maximum load capacity of the BLP01 is 500lbs.

Clamping Forks

The PF85B, PF125B, and PF175B clamping forks secure the BLP01(/M) post to any breadboard or optical table. These clamping forks create three points of contact with the table for high stability. For flexibility in the positioning of post assemblies, Thorlabs offers three sizes: the PF85B fork has a 0.85" (21.6 mm) long counterbored slot, the PF125B fork has a 1.25" (31.8 mm) long counterbored slot, and the PF175B fork has a 2.12" (53.8 mm) long counterbored slot.

Please note that significant overtightening of clamping forks can deform the surface of an optical table, which can cause misalignment of components and decrease stability of the clamping fork.

These clamping forks are also available in packs of five.
