Superluminescent Diodes (SLDs) are excellent high-power, broadband light sources that are ideal for use in applications such as optical sensing, display technology, metrology, and imaging. This page contains SLDs with center wavelengths from 405 nm to 650 nm that are built into a butterfly package. Thorlabs also offers NIR SLDs for wavelengths from 810 nm to 1550 nm, many of which are ideal for spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Each device is built into a 14-pin butterfly package with an integrated thermoelectric cooler (TEC) and thermistor to ensure output stability. For more information on the pin assignments, see the Pin Diagrams tab; note that the SLD650B 650 nm SLD is the only model that includes a monitor photodiode. The SLD output is coupled into an SM fiber with terminated with a 2.0 mm narrow key FC/APC connector. We do not recommend using these SLDs with components that are prone to back reflections, such as FC/PC connectors, because optical feedback can diminish the output power or damage the SLD.  

The SLDs featured on this page are single spatial mode and have a near-Gaussian optical spectrum. More detailed typical specifications for each item, as well as mechanical drawings, are available in the tables below. Each SLD is shipped with an individualized product data sheet, which includes information on the spectrum and operating parameters of the specific device.
