Large Diameter Adjustment Knob
The F25ES050 and F25ES100 Matched Adjuster/Bushing Pairs use fine 1/4"-170 threads such as those found in our 1/2" (13 mm) and 1" (25 mm) travel translation stages. These adjusters exceed the industry class 3 thread tolerance standard and are also DFARS (Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement) compliant.
Each fine adjustment screw includes a 0.1" long section of 1/4"-80 thread at the end that engages the Ø0.58" adjustment knob. This knob acts as a stop when the full travel range is achieved, and we do not recommend using this adjuster without a knob attached. Doing so will increase the chance of over-actuating the adjuster, which can damage the threading. The knob can be removed and replaced with any of knobs available below. Each includes a clearance hole for accessing the adjuster's hex with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key. If the included knob is replaced by one that is supplied by the user, ensure that the entire length of 1/4"-80 threads are engaged to prevent damage.
These matched 170 TPI adjusters and bushings are manufactured to tighter tolerances than the ASME/ANSI Class 3 UTS standard so that very little adjuster lubricant is needed. In typical adjusters, actuator adjustments cause the lubricant to be squeezed out of some spaces and built up in others. Over time this nonequilibrium lubricant distribution will relax slowly back into an equilibrium state, which may cause the adjuster screw to move. Thorlabs' matched adjusters do not suffer from these problems due to their tighter tolerances.
Integrating Fine Adjustment Screws Into Optomechanical Systems
The assembly process begins by producing the appropriately sized mating hole for the threaded bushing. Given the close fit between the threaded bushing and the mating adjuster screw, we caution against using a press fit to assemble these products. For our own production needs, we use a permanent anaerobic adhesive that provides excellent long-term performance.
We recommend using Loctite Anaerobic Adhesive product number 680 or equivalent. In order to ensure maximum strength between the bonded parts, we strongly urge the user to follow carefully the instructions provided by Loctite, which specify the amount of clearance between the threaded bushing and the mounting plate. The most common source of failure is not allowing for the proper clearance between the parts being bonded since this clearance provides for the proper volume of adhesive.
When assembling, apply a small amount of the Loctite adhesive to the threaded bushing only. Rotate the bushing as it is installed to ensure a uniform distribution of the adhesive. After insertion, remove any excess adhesive from around the part.
As shown in the figure to the right, the flange on the mating bushing is designed to support the axial load of the screw and bushing assembly. Please note that when mounting an adjuster/bushing pair onto a translation stage provided by Thorlabs, the orientation of the bushing would be flipped due to the lower axial load on the adjuster.
OEM & Custom Precision Screws
Thorlabs manufactures custom and high volume OEM precision screws and bushings with various diameters, lengths, and threads. Precision Screw Capabilities
Thorlabs' in-house machine shop, located in Newton, NJ, gives us the ability to quickly produce large quantities of precision screws and bushings. We are equipped to manufacture screw diameters ranging from 2.5 mm to 20 mm with lengths up to 165 mm and a maximum thread pitch of 200 TPI. Our standard adjuster screw design has a hardened steel ball tip to provide a single point of contact; for other applications we are able to provide adjusters without the steel ball. Custom orders can be achieved on a case-by-case basis. For large orders of an item, Thorlabs passes on to the customer the cost savings associated with planned production of high volumes of that item. For more information on Thorlabs' discount pricing policy, click the "V" link to the right. We also offer a large variety of stock precision screws, which are available here.

Mechanical Drawing for the F25ES050 and F25ES100 Matched Adjuster/Bushing Pairs
These high-precision 1/4"-170 matched Adjuster/Bushing Pairs provide 0.006" (149.4 µm) of fine translation per revolution. The adjuster/bushing pairs can be manually adjusted either by hand or with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key; the knob does not need to be removed to use a balldriver or hex key. Each adjuster/bushing pair includes an adjuster knob; this knob may be removed to place other knobs on the exposed 1/4"-80 threads. This knob acts as a stop when the full travel range is achieved, and we do not recommend using this adjuster without a knob attached. Doing so will increase the chance of over-actuating the adjuster, which can damage the threading. The Ø0.19" (Ø4.8 mm) spherical tip of the adjuster is fixed onto the adjuster using epoxy.

F25SSK1L Removable Adjustment Knob (Lower-Left Adjuster) on a KM200 Mount
Our F25SSK1 and F25SSK1L Removable Aluminum Adjustment Knobs may be used with the F25ES050 and F25ES100 Matched Adjuster Bushing Pairs. Simply remove the included F25SSK1 adjustment knob, and thread the replacement knob onto the exposed 0.1" of 1/4"-80 thread. These knobs can be manually turned either by hand or with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key. This provides quick and easy adjustments for a broad range of applications. We offer two sizes of adjustment knobs. Our standard size (item # F25SSK1) has a 0.58" diameter, while our larger size (item # F25SSK1L) has a 0.83" diameter.

F25SSK1S has a small diameter and includes side holes for adjustment with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) hex key.
Our F25SSK1S Low-Profile, Removable Adjustment Knobs may be used with the F25ES050 and F25ES100 Matched Adjuster Bushing Pairs. Simply remove the included F25SSK1 adjustment knob, and thread the replacement knob onto the exposed 0.1" of 1/4"-80 thread. This provides quick and easy adjustments for a broad range of applications. In addition, these knobs feature six equally spaced actuation holes along the outer diameter of the knob that can be engaged with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key, as shown in the image to the right. The side holes provide the user with a method for more precise adjustments and allow the user an easier method of turning the knob when access to the knob is limited in an experimental setup. The small diameter (Ø0.35") of this knob also allows kinematic mounts, such as the KS1, to be attached directly to an optical table or breadboard, as shown in the image to the right.
These color-coded aluminum knobs may be used with the F25ES050 and F25ES100 Matched Adjuster Bushing Pairs. Simply remove the included F25SSK1 adjustment knob, and thread the replacement knob onto the exposed 0.1" of 1/4"-80 thread. These knobs can be manually turned either by hand or with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key. These knobs are interchangeable, and the variety of anodized colors available allows the user to easily tag and identify certain mounts in the setup. They are available in packages of 10 knobs, except for the F25SSK1-MULTI, which is a package of 16 (2 of each color).
