These 3/16"-100 adjuster screws are especially challenging to manufacture given that the thread depth (peak to valley) is just 0.006". We have developed a manufacturing process that meets the Class 3 thread tolerancing standard.

If you are incorporating any of these components into larger optomechanical systems, please ensure that the specifications for any mating parts you are manufacturing have the appropriate tolerances. For more details, please see the Integration tab.

Threaded Bushing Application

Integrating Fine Adjustment Screws Into Optomechanical Systems

The assembly process begins by producing the appropriately sized mating hole for the threaded bushing. Given the close fit between the threaded bushing and the mating adjuster screw, we caution against using a press fit to assemble these products. For our own production needs, we use a permanent anaerobic adhesive that provides excellent long-term performance.

We recommend using Loctite Anaerobic Adhesive product number 680 or equivalent. In order to ensure maximum strength between the bonded parts, we strongly urge the user to follow carefully the instructions provided by Loctite, which specify the amount of clearance between the threaded bushing and the mounting plate. The most common source of failure is not allowing for the proper clearance between the parts being bonded since this clearance provides for the proper volume of adhesive.

When assembling, apply a small amount of the Loctite adhesive to the threaded bushing only. Rotate the bushing as it is installed to ensure a uniform distribution of the adhesive. After insertion, remove any excess adhesive from around the part.

As shown in the figure to the right, the flange on the mating bushing is designed to support the axial load of the screw and bushing assembly.

Drilling and Tapping

While we recommend using our fine adjusters with the appropriately matched threaded bushing (sold below), it is also possible to incorporate them directly into a part or material by creating a threaded hole. For the adjusters on this page, the diameter of the pilot bore should be 0.177" +0.002"/ -0.001". The corresponding imperial drill bit is size #16 (0.1770"). The hole can then be tapped with TAP316100. For fine pitch threads, it is especially important to tightly tolerance the pilot bore because of the shallow thread depth. For more information, see our taps and drill bit kit page.

Precision Screw Capabilities

Thorlabs' in-house machine shop, located in Newton, NJ, gives us the ability to quickly produce large quantities of precision screws and bushings. We are equipped to manufacture screw diameters ranging from 2 mm to 20 mm with lengths up to 165 mm and a maximum thread pitch of 200 TPI. Our standard adjuster screw design has a hardened steel ball tip to provide a single point of contact; for other applications we are able to provide adjusters without the steel ball. Custom orders can be achieved on a case-by-case basis. For large orders of an item, Thorlabs passes on to the customer the cost savings associated with planned production of high volumes of that item. For more information on Thorlabs' discount pricing policy, click the "V" link to the right. We also offer a large variety of stock precision screws, which are available here.

Fast Turn-Around Times
Our experienced, highly skilled machinists are running our on-site Citizen Swiss Screw Machines 24 hours a day, allowing us to produce high-volume custom and OEM orders. Each machine is capable of running unattended, producing one screw every 30 to 120 seconds. This flexibility allows us to fulfill multiple orders at once without sacrificing quality.

High Quality
Thorlabs inspects all of our fabricated precision screws and bushings after the initial fabrication process and right before packaging. All inspections adhere to the ANSI AQL1.5 acceptable quality level, which states that if a certain percentage, based upon the amount of product in a certain lot, does not meet specification, then the entire lot is not sold. This ensures that all customers receive the highest quality product every time and that all items will be of equal performance.

Some sets are a little too loose or tight, what is the ideal vacuum grease for optimal movement?
YLohia  (posted 2021-04-05 02:11:07.0)
Thank you for your feedback. These adjusters and bushings are made to tight Class 3 standards. However, the feel for non-matched pairs will differ from unit to unit due to slight tolerancing differences. We tend to use Krytox LVP grease for vacuum applications.

I want to use this for fine adjustment of an inspection fixture. I am wondering if there is enough room in this knob to tap a 10-32 hole to attach a swivel pad on a 10/32 screw. The 3/16-100 would be threaded into a base and the 10-32 would be a permanent mount to the knob.
llamb  (posted 2019-06-25 10:51:54.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The F19SSK1L knob features a Ø0.152" access bore of 0.175" length for the clearance of a hex key. This can be seen more easily using the CAD models available for this part. You can use this bore to tap a #10-32 thread, as the minimum minor diameter for the thread is still larger than this bore. I have reached out to you directly as well to discuss your application further.

So the drawing states 0.13" (3mm) ball size... 0.13" is 3,302mm and the cad-model seems to be something in between... so what is it?
llamb  (posted 2018-07-12 09:39:54.0)
Thank you for your feedback. The values were rounded in the support drawing. The ball tip is Ø0.125" or Ø3.175 mm in diameter.

I am having great difficulty using the adjusters with the 5/64 hex socket and think it would be an improvement if the adjuster were extended slightly to include a round hole lead in which is a tight clearance on the key. With the suggested change fitting the key in the hexagon can be done in 2 stages. 1) fitting the key in the round hole so that it is concentric with the hexagon. 2) fiddling the key into the hexagon.

A response from Tyler at Thorlabs to somansv: The hex adjusters are RoHS compliant while the bushings are RoHS exempt 6. This information is typically available on the "Documents and Drawings" tab or by clicking on the part number in the price box. Thank you for your interest in our products.

3/16"-100 Threaded Bushings

  • Ideal for Slip Fit
  • Three Lengths Available
  • Made from 510 Phosphor Bronze (Vacuum Rated for 10-6 Torr)
  • Recommended Bore Diameter:
    • N100: 0.2415" +0.0005"/-0.0000"
    • F19: 0.2895" +0.0005"/-0.0000"

The N100B2P and F19SS series threaded bushings are designed for slip fit applications, as the 3/16"-100 threading tolerances are too tight for press fit. The recommended bore diameter for our N100 bushings is 0.2415" +0.0005"/-0.000", and for our F19 bushings is 0.2895" +0.0005/-0.0000". Each bushing is made of phosphor bronze in order to prevent damage to the fine adjusters. Phosphor bronze offers advantages like vacuum compatibility over brass. For vacuum applications, we recommend a thorough ultrasonic cleaning to remove any grease or particulates prior to use. To learn more about the use of fine adjustment screws and bushings in optomechanical systems, please see the Integration tab above.
