Thorlabs’ has created a Ge doped silica core, optical fiber with a cutoff wavelength of 1.7 µm that can operate up to 2.1 µm. This fiber also features a large core diameter of 11 µm, simplifying the coupling process. The numerical aperture of the fiber was designed so that it matched Corning's SMF28 fiber, making it the next incremental step past the standard telecom fiber.
