The new LED4C Series 4-Wavelength LED Sources are ideal for application requiring up to four wavelengths of high-performance light. These light sources efficiently combine all of the beams into a single collimated emission. Together with the DC4100 4-Channel Driver, the LED4C forms a reliable, versatile light source that offers fast switching and accurate modulation of each individual LED. The source is vibration free, easy to operate, and offers a long lifetime (see the Specs tab for details). The LED4C Series source is available with 54 different preselected combinations of 10 LED wavelengths. Any combination of four wavelengths can be combined except for the pairings listed below. The output aperture of these LED sources is SM2 (2.035"-40) internally threaded. For Olympus, Nikon, Zeiss, and Leica microscopes, optional adapters are available that directly mount the 4-Wavelength Sources onto the microscope lightport (see SM2-Threaded Microscope Adapter).

The LED4C contains four individual bare LEDs. These LEDs have high divergence and the light is guided through the system using mirrors. The output is collimated with an aspheric condenser lens. This setup inherently leads to a reduction in the measured output power from that of the bare LEDs. Thorlabs also offers single-channel collimated LEDs, which have higher power outputs due to the lack of the wavelength combining optics.

The following LED wavelength combinations cannot be included in the same LED4C source:

385 nm and 405 nm
455 nm and 470 nm
455 nm and 505 nm
505 nm and 530 nm
617 nm and 625 nm
625 nm and 660 nm

Compared to conventional, non-LED sources, these 4-wavelength sources offer many advantages such as higher signal-to-noise ratios due to narrow bandwidth emission, easy system integration, simple operation without maintenance cycles, and no active cooling requirements or thermal filtering due to minimal thermal loads. The operation wavelength and intensity can be set quickly, making them an ideal choice for microscopy applications where multiple wavelengths and short time constants are required.
