Features- Ø200 µm, Ø300 µm, or Ø400 µm Core Size Multimode Fiber
- Ø2.5 mm Ceramic Ferrule End Integrates with an Implantable Fiber Optic Cannula
- FC/PC Connector on the Non-Specimen Side
- Lightweight Protective Tubing
These multimode patch cables are ideal for Optogenetics use. The Ø2.5 mm ferrule is perfectly sized to connect with an implantable fiber optic cannula, while the FC/PC connector can be connected to a fiber optic rotary joint or light source. The interconnect provides stress relief from specimen movement while still being easy to disconnect. The thin Ø2 mm outer tubing protects the fiber and minimizes cable mass (as low as 8.6 g for a 1.0 m cable). Each patch cable includes two protective caps that shield the ferrule ends from dust and other hazards. Additional CAPF Fiber Caps compatible with both ends are also sold separately. Ceramic Ferrule Size Thorlabs' optogenetics patch cables have either a Ø1.25 mm or Ø2.5 mm ceramic ferrule end. The Ø2.5 mm ferrule end cables, sold on this page, provide a stronger mating force, preventing disconnections caused by moving specimens. In contrast, our lightweight, compact Ø1.25 mm ferrule end cables, sold here, minimize the pressure on the specimen and offer the ability to implant several cannulae near the same location. Thorlabs' fiber optic cannulae have diameters that match the ceramic ferrules. Fiber Core Size For maximum signal strength, choose a patch cable with a core size that matches your cannula, as well as any other patch cables in the system. Ø200 µm and Ø300 µm core size cables are less invasive, making them ideal for smaller animals. Ø400 µm core size cables offer a more robust solution for larger animals and higher power light sources. When choosing fiber optic components, the core sizes of all parts (cannula and patch cables) should match for maximum signal strength at the cannula tip. Patch Cable Connectors The diameter of the ceramic ferrule on the patch cable should be chosen to match the diameter of the ferrule on our implantable fiber optic cannulae. Cannulae and patch cables with different ferrule materials can be mixed and matched without significant additional signal losses. However, fiber core sizes, numerical aperture (NA), and ferrule diameters should match for proper connection and maximum signal strength. The other end of the patch cable features an FC/PC connector for interfacing with other FC/PC components, such as our fiber-coupled, 473 nm laser source. Custom Cables Thorlabs also manufactures custom fiber optic cables with same-day shipping. We offer our ferrule cables with many other fiber types, in any length, and with a plethora of other custom features.
