Fluorescent Disks
The VRC2 and VRC4 series of alignment disks are available in Ø1/2" and Ø1" disks and are ideal for use in fixed lens mounts such as the LMR05 or LMR1. They are made from fluorescent material to aid the alignment of IR and visible beams. The graphs to the right detail the absorption and emission bands of these alignment disks. Fluorescent disks are also available for SM1 and RMS threaded components. These threaded disks utilize the same fluorescent material as the VRC2 series of disks and feature an alignment target. More information on these fluorescent disks is available below and in Specs tab above.

Visible Alignment
Our frosted glass alignment disks provide an easy means to align beams exiting a lens tube. As the ground glass is transparent, you can see the beam's position as shown in the image at the top right of this page. Unmounted and mounted versions are available. Mounted versions are offered in SM05-, SM1-, or SM2-threaded mounting cells.

Lens Mount Alignment
Our drop-on alignment plates for the LMR1 and LMR2 mounts provide a Ø1 mm through-hole and laser-engraved crosshairs for aligning visible lasers in an optical path. The two points of contact allow for minimal disruption of the aligned system when removed. These can also be used with our SM1 and SM2 series lens tubes.

Cage Alignment
Cage beam alignment plates are available for our 16 mm, 30 mm, and 60 mm cages. VRC4CPT plate is for 30 mm cage systems and offers a fluorescent disk made of the same material as our VRC4 series of alignment disks.

Cage Plate Stops
ERCPS Cage Plate Stops provide a convenient means for marking the position of cage plates along cage rods.

Response from Tim at Thorlabs: Thank you for sharing your idea with us! I agree that putting in a through hole would be a useful feature. A 5mm diameter hole would limit the use for smaller beam diameters and therefore may limit its value for some users. We would love to hear more feedback on this and would like to encourage others to post their opinions as well. For your immediate needs, we would be happy to provide this as a custom and I will contact you to get more information.

I've bought the SM1A7 and have drilled a hole in the middle of it many times. Is there a way Thorlabs could provide a pre-drilled (1mm to 5mm diam) hole someday? That would save me some time on the drill press

A response from Laurie at Thorlabs to acable: Thank you for your feedback concerning our alignment tool offering and the need for having our irises more strongly linked to this page, which is devoted to items that are solely used for alignment purposes. Thorlabs does indeed manufacture a wide selection of SM1-threaded irises, which are located on three different pages of our website. To make that connection more readily visible, we have moved irises from being the 5th related items link to being second on this page. As a result of your feedback, we also discovered that we didn't have any linkage from our iris pages back to this one. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve our website, and we hope these changes make it easier for you to navigate our product portfolio.

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to last poster: thank you for your feedback. We can certainly modify an SM1A7 with a 1 mm diameter through hole like the LMR1AP. We can also expand the design of the LMR1AP with a new part that is compatible with the LM1-A and LM1-B nested mounts. Please send us an e-mail at techsupport@thorlabs.com to further discuss your requirements.

You should make your threaded target (SM1A7) with a hole like your LMR1AP. Can you make a target that hangs on a LM1-A/B pair instead of threading in?

A response from Adam at Thorlabs to Paul: I am in the process of looking into a custom option that would allow you to use our products at 780nm. If this custom option is available, we can also consider adding this to the new product line.

Oops, I meant to say that we bought a VRC4CPT, the one with the IR disk. The CPA1 and CPA2 plates dont have an IR disk. The following was done in a very dim lab. A 35 mW, 800 um beam of 780 will produce an extremely pale green dot on the target, but the dot is only visible if I turn my head and look at it through my laser goggles at an angle. Looking at it head on, it is invisible. The goggles are Kentek KRZ-C505C. They are OD 7+ at 532 and 755-810 nm, among others. And thats where my problem was: using other goggles, amber Thorlabs that are OD7 at 190-534 nm and I have measured to be OD 3.2 at 780 nm, I can see the green dot for about 25 mW, same waist size. I guess Ill have to switch goggles to do the aligning. It would be great if you could make an alignment plate like the VRC4CPT but using the material thats in the IRC3 card, now superseded by the VRC5 card.

A response from Adam to Paul: At this time we do not have an IR alignment disk that works at 780nm. However, we would be interested in how our VRC4CPT would work at 780nm. We can provide you with a free sample if you would provide us with the test data. We are also looking into custom versions that may work for 780nm at this time.

I bought a CPA1, not having noticed that it is not useful for 780 nm. Could you make one that works at 780 nm? In the meantime, I may consider sacrificing an old IR card.

Fluorescing Alignment Disks
Central Hole Allows Partial Beam Transmission for Alignment
Ideal for Use as a Drop-In Alignment Guide
Use with Our Ø1/2" and Ø1" Optical Component Holders
  Two Fluorescing Material Options

These IR alignment disks are ideally used as drop-in tools to simplify active alignment of IR and visible setups. A small Ø1.5 mm hole at the center enables beams to be aligned with the optical axis of our mounts or lens tubes. The active material on the VRC4D05 and VRC4D1 does not require charging and will emit light persistently when exposed to light in the 790 - 840 nm, 870 - 1070 nm, or 1500 - 1590 nm spectral region. The active material on the VRC2D05 and VRC2D1 requires charging by visible light. When charged the disks will emit light when exposed to light in the 400 to 640 nm or 800 to 1700 nm spectral range.

Threaded Fluorescing Alignment Disks
Constant Emission for Viewing CW Beams
  Slow-Fading Phosphor
  Externally SM1 (1.035"-40)or RMS Threaded

The VRC2SM1 IR viewing and alignment disk is a photosensitive disk made from a slow-fading phosphor that is designed to simplify the alignment of infrared beams. The alignment disk contains a target that clearly marks the optical axis of any SM1 (1.035"-40) threaded mount or lens tubes to which it is attached. The depth of the SM1 threading on the back side of the alignment disk is purposely kept short so that the user can quickly insert or remove the VRC2SM1 from the optical setup.

The VRC2RMS IR viewing and alignment disk is designed to simplify the alignment of infrared beams along the optical axis of an internally threaded RMS mount. The VRC2RMS has external RMS threads that allow it to be threaded into a mount designed for an RMS-threaded microscope objective lens. Both of these disks require charging in visible light.

  • Quick, Drop-In Beam Alignment Tools
  • Small Through Hole Aligned at Center of 16 mm, 30 mm, or 60 mm Cage Assemblies

These drop-in alignment plates are convenient tools for aligning visible beams in cage-based optical systems. They provide a Ø1 mm through hole at the exact center of the cage assembly (except for the CPA2, which contains a Ø5 mm through hole). For easy alignment, the through hole is surrounded by engraved rings.

The VRC4CPT Alignment Plate is specifically designed to align IR beams in a 30-mm-cage-based optical assembly. The front is identical to the CPA1 (shown to the left), and the back (shown to the right) includes a non-rotating IR-sensitive fluorescing alignment disk made of the same material used in our VRC4 Viewing Card. This disk has a centered Ø2 mm through hole, while the plate has a Ø1 mm centered through hole. See the table below for more information.
