1/2" (12.7 mm) Travel Miniature Dovetail Stages

Features

  • Modular and Compact Design
  • Dovetail Mechanism
  • Lockable Moving Platform
  • Rapid and Smooth Positioning

The DT12 dovetail translation stage is a miniature, entry-level positioner, ideal for use in applications where space is limited and is available in either single-axis or multi-axis configurations. It is 1.0" square and provides a travel length of 0.5". The design uses a precision-rolled M3 x 0.35 mm pitch leadscrew for smooth linear positioning along the entire range of travel. The moving platform is lockable to guard against accidental movement. The top and bottom plates feature 8-32 (M4) holes for a variety of mounting options.

DT12XYZ-RA

The modular design allows the stages to be assembled easily into 2- or 3-axis configurations using the DT12A right angle bracket. XYZ configurations can easily be built from a DT12XY stage and a DT12 stage by using the DT12A bracket. Please note that in order to guarantee orthogonality of the axes, XY configurations must be ordered preconfigured from Thorlabs. Slotted base plates for mounting the stages to an optical table are supplied with all 2- and 3-axis configurations but are also available separately. Alternatively, the stage can be mounted to an #8-32 (M4) threaded post.

Various application accessories are also available (see below); the DT12CSA allows the stage to be mounted with the 60 mm cage system, and the DT12RA enables the stage (or other optomech device such as a lens holder) to be mounted horizontally in a rotational axis, providing 360° movement. It also allows a rotational axis to be added to an existing configuration - see below for more details. When combined with the RC series of rail carriers (an SD1 adapter ring is required for use with the RC1 or RC3), the DT12 stage can be mounted within rail systems using the RLA series of small optical rails.

The photo to the right shows a DT12XYZ three -axis stage with a DT12RA rotation adapter fitted. A rotational axis has been added to the 3-axis configuration by fitting another DT12 stage to the rotation adapter - see below for more details. Please note that the additional DT12 stage is not included with the DT12RA and must be purchased separately.

This tab describes mounting options for using the stages with our Ø1/2" posts and our dovetail optical rails and rail carriers. We also offer a line of mounting brackets and adapters below that are specifically designed for our miniature dovetail stages.

DT12_Post

The stage can be mounted to an Ø1/2" post as shown to the right by threading the 8-32 (M4) stud on the post into the tapped hole on the stage's bottom plate.

DT12_Rail

The DT12(/M) stage can also be incorporated into systems built using our dovetail optical rails. The stage can be bolted directly to the RC1 rail carrier. This is accomplished by using an 8-32 (M4) screw with an SC1 counterbore adapter inserted into the counterbore of the RC1, and then threading the screw into the tapped hole on the stage's bottom plate. The RC1carrier provides coarse positioning along the rail and the DT12 stage can be oriented to provide fine positioning in any direction.

The RC3 can also be used to introduce coarse positioning at 90° to the rail direction. A typical assembly is shown below. The DT12 stage shown could be substituted for an XZ, XY, or XYZ configuration.

I hope I am not being silly, but I am confused by the application idea pictured above (showing the DT12/M dovetail stage connected to the RC1 rail carrier). How are the two connected together? The mounting hole on the RC1 is a M6 or M4 (with SD1 adapter ring). In the image this seems to be connected to the thru hole on the DT12/M, and not the M4 tapped hole!

Response from Sean at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. Both the top and bottom plates of the DT12/M have tapped M4 holes. The stage can therefore be attached as shown, as you described using an SD1 adapter ring to fit an M4 cap screw through the counterbore of the RC1 and into the bottom tapped hole on the DT12/M. I'm going to add a caption to the photo to explain this today, and I'll add additional photos and text to clarify the mounting options over the next several days.

A response from Laurie at Thorlabs to the anonymous poster: Thank you for inquiring about our customer inspired notation. You are indeed correct that the DT Series of stages have been part of our product line for many years (since 2007). The customer inspired designation is attributed to the DT12B/M, which is our metric base plate. Although its imperial counterpart, the DT12B, has also been around since 2007 and was originally sold as a universal product (it had imperial 6-32 taps that could accept both imperial and M3 screws), the solution wasn't ideal. Based on a customer request to make a truly metric baseplate, the DT12B/M was put into production and given the customer-inspired designation. We now ship all our metric DT Series stages with this new customer-inspired base plate.

You said these are "customer inspired" but, come on now, I've had parts exactly like these in my lab for many years so they really can't be customer inspired, right. You might be able to snow the young guys but we old guys know the truth.

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: The DT12/M has M4 mounting holes whereas the PH2/M has M6 so you cannot mount the PH2/M directly onto the DT12/M. Please consider using the AP6M4M adapter linked below and contact TechSupport@thorlabs.com if you have any questions: http://www.thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage9.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=1745&pn=AP6M4M

Hi, I received my DT12XY/M today and realized something until I got it. The description and drawings are not complete. For example it´s never mentioned the type of screw required for the base plate, and eventhough the screws are included(which now I know its M3?) the screws are not fiting well to the holes(they don´t screw smoothly). There should be a better description for this item. Cheers, Esteban

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to Esteban Bermudez: Thank you very much for your feedback! You are correct, we should do a better job at specifying the screw sizes and hole dimensions of the DT12 series stages. To this end, we will modify the bill of materials of the DT12B base plate (included with the DT12XY/M) to include M3 attachment screws, and we will also add one M4 and one #8-32 countersunk screws for attaching the baseplate to the bottom of the stage. We will also update the drawings of these parts to make this information clearer. I will contact you directly in case you have any further questions.

A reply from Jens at Thorlabs: indeed this kind of miniature dovetail stage is offered by a few companies with very similar features. If you want to get a detailed comparison of spec values I will be happy to supply that based on any competitor item part number you are looking into. In a situation where the difference in the technical parameters is minor you also may want to take into account that we keep those items on stock for same day delivery. In addition we constantly add components to our portfolio to give you the highest possible flexibility in how to use and combine our items. So it might also be important to consider how the overall setup should look like and if you can get most or all those parts from one supplier which than will save you time and money.

There is nothing on this page that shows me what the function of the DT12XYZ-RA & DT12XYZ-RA/M, it would be great to see something that helps me to know what the part looks like. I also find the discription a little confusing what does "RA mounted" mean in the description?

Maybe a ghosted version of the cage rods showing the DT12CSA would help to make it more clear. I agree with ACable that the function is not obvious on the product page without having to go into the application tab.

To acable: Did you get a chance to look through the "Application Options" Tab? The DT12SCA is shown in a cage system, and the DT12RA is shown with a mounting base and lens mount. If these images are not helpful when it comes to addressing how these parts are used, please let us know.

DT12SCA, it is not clear how this part is intended to be used, perhaps a photo with the unit placed in a cage system. It would also be nice if the distance from the top surface of the stage to the cage center line was included. DT12RA, same here, the part by itself doesnt allow the reader to understand its application.

DT12 Series Mounting Accessories
DT12_Clamps2

DT12A Angle Bracket -The DT12A, which is compatible with both imperial and metric stages, allows two stages to be mounted perpendicular to each other. This bracket is required when assembling stages in a XZ, YZ, or XYZ configuration (as shown in the main image above).

DT12B Baseplate - The DT12B(/M), provides a convenient method of bolting the stage to the work surface (a baseplate is supplied with all two- and three-axis configurations). The stage fixes to the basplate using the 6-32 (M3) bolts and cleats provided. A countersunk mounting bolt (1/4"-20 or M6) for fixing the baseplate to the work surface is also supplied.

CL6 Clamp - The CL6 optical clamps offer an alternative method of fixing the stage to the work surface. Two CL6 clamps can be used in place of the DT12B baseplate as shown to the right.

DT12_Base
DT12_Clamps2

A slotted base plate (DT12B) is available for mounting the stage to an optical table. The base is fixed to the work surface via a central hole (both imperial and metric fixings are supplied).
The stage is attached to the base by plastic cleats as shown left.

The stage can also be secured using two CL6 clamps as shown right.

A response from Ken at Thorlabs: 1. The clamps are made from black nylon as are the two guide bushes. We have seen this problem before due to over tightening. In order to overcome this we will make the parts from a different material as well as adding a small radius to the sharp corners to reduce the stress concentrations. We will now look at implementing these changes to the clamps as well to improve their performance. 2. We will look into adding the clamp groove in the orthogonal direction. Due to the low cost of this part, we may not be able to offer this without compromising the low sales price. But thanks for this point. 3. The critical screw length marking; This is not to protect the leadscrew but to inform the customer that because the hole is a blind hole they have to pick the right length of thread to get a good clamp. Again, we will look into this, I suspect it was to keep costs low.

Dear Madam or Sir, Unfortunately, the clamps that fix the DT12 stage to the DT12B baseplate are made of plastic and immediately break, which I find very dissappointing and not up to the standards of Thorlabs. It is also very unfortunate that the clamping grooves of the DT12 stage run only in the same direction as the travel direction. Additional grooves in the orthogonal direction would give a lot more mounting flexibility. Finally, the notice about the critical screw length appears to be on the wrong side of the DT12, where the tapped hole is blind anyway. On the opposite side, a too long screw could actually destroy the lead screw. Best regards, Thomas Fernholz

DT12 Series Application Accessories

The DT12CSA allows the DT12 stage to be mounted within a 60 mm cage system. When inserted into a cage system (as shown below), the distance from the top surface of the stage to the center line of the cage system will be 24 mm.

The DT12RA rotation adapter enables the DT12 stage (or other optomech device such as a lens holder) to be mounted in a rotational axis to provide 360o of movement. The rotation adapter is lockable and can be secured directly to the work surface using the DT12B base plate or two CL6 clamps. It can also be mounted on the DT12CSA cage system adapter or fitted to an existing two- or three-axis configuration to provide rotation in pitch roll or yaw as described below.

Using the DT12CSA Cage System Adapter

The DT12CSA cage system adapter is used to mount the DT12 series of stages within a 60 mm cage system. Optical components such as lens mounts, which are fixed to the DT12 stage, can be positioned quickly within the area of interest prior to being positioned precisely using the stage.

Using the DT12RA Rotation Adapters

The DT12RA rotation adapter can be attached to the work surface (using either the CL6 clamps or the DT12B base plate) to create a rotational platform as shown opposite. Optical components such as lens mounts can be fitted to the assembly and rotated. A pinch bolt locks the component into the desired position.

The DT12RA can also be used with the DT12CSA described above. The DT12 stage shown can be replaced with the DT12RA to provide a rotation platform within the 60 mm cage system, for optical components such as lens mounts and filter holders.

The DT12RA can also be fitted to an existing stage configuration to provide angular rotation in pitch, roll or yaw. The rotation adapter includes an angle bracket which is easily mounted to an existing single, 2- or 3-axis configuration. Full fitting instructions are included. The photo to the right shows a DT12RA and additional DT12 stage fitted to a DT12XYZ three axis set up.
