TravelMax Steel Stages TravelMax series stages are equipped with actuator side clamps that are removable, thereby allowing any combination of manual, piezo extenders, or motorized actuators to be fitted. The stages featured here are shipped preconfigured with either a micrometer drive (LNR50M) or a differential drive (LNR50DD). A pre-configured Stepper Motor (LNR50S) option is also available. Alternatively, the stage can be purchased without drives, please contact Tech Support for a quotation.
Although these stages are supplied pre-configured with an actuator, these can be easily replaced if the application requirements change. Please see our compatible actuators subgroup below for details of other compatible actuators such as motor or piezo drives.
These stages offer stability, long travel, and high load capacity as well as flexible drive options, making them an ideal solution for all translation applications. Designed with the highest quality linear rails available, the performance is further enhanced by utilizing thermally matched materials that ensure stability, even in less-than-ideal conditions. The rigidity of the all-steel construction, along with the heavy-duty cross-roller bearings, provides uniform performance over the entire 2" (50 mm) range of motion.
Two drive options are available depending on application requirements. The standard micrometer supplied with the LNR50M provides a 2" range with a thread pitch of 0.1 mm. The Vernier provides graduations every 10 µm. The LNR50DD is equipped with a differential drive. The coarse adjustment provides 0.5 mm per revolution while the fine adjustment provides 50 μm per revolution. A Vernier scale on the differential drive has graduations every 1 µm.
Wide Range of Mounting Options The TravelMax™ was designed with flexibility and functionality in mind. The top and bottom surfaces of the LNR series of stages are equipped with a wide array of 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped holes to maximize the mounting flexibility of components. Two counterbored clearance holes are present in the moving world to allow the stage to be bolted easily to the work surface in either a left- or right-handed configuration.
The LNR50P1 base plate (shown in the photo to the left) provides additional mounting options and provides extra clearance between the stage and the work surface (e.g., when fitting motor drives). Tapped holes match up to the two counterbored clearance holes mentioned above, and four slotted holes allow the LNR50P2 angle bracket mentioned opposite to be attached directly. The plate measures 100 mm x 195 mm x 12 mm (3.9" x 7.7" x 0.47").
The LNR50P2 angle bracket (shown in the photo to the right) allows the LNR stage to be mounted vertically. When combined with the LNR50P1 described above, it can be used to build an XZ, YZ, or XYZ configuration.
Manual This Differential drive has been designed for use the TravelMax series stages, and provides 2.0" (50 mm) of coarse adjustment (500 µm per rev) and 300 µm of fine adjustment (50 µm per rev). The large diameter knob has graduations every 1.0 µm and allows precise, ultra-smooth control over the entire range of motion.
Open Loop Piezo The PAS series Piezo Actuators provide adjustment lengths of 20 µm, 40 µm or 100 µm, at a resolution of 20 nm, 40 nm and 100 nm respectively. The drive voltage is 0 - 75 V. Thorlabs supplies a number of suitable piezo controllers such as our TPZ001 T-Cube piezo driver.
The actuator is shipped with a flat tip as shown, but can accept any of our PAA Series actuator tips.
Closed Loop Piezo The PAZ series actuators has a travel length of 20 µm, 40 µm or 100 µm, at a resolution of 20 nm, 40 nm and 100 nm respectively. Feedback connection is provided via a 7 pin LEMO connector that can be used in conjunction with our APT series of motion controllers - see below. The drive voltage is 0 - 75 V. Thorlabs supplies a number of suitable piezo controllers such as our BPC301 benchtop piezo driver.
The actuator is shipped with a flat tip as shown, but can accept any of our PAA Series actuator tips.
Stepper Motor Drive The DRV014 offers 2" (50 mm) of travel and a bidirectional repeatability better than 1 μm. When used with one of our Stepper Motor Controllers, such as the BSC200 Series, a resolution better than 50 nm, and a 20 mm per second maximum speed can be achieved. The hybrid stepper motor, has a rotor that consists of 50 individual magnetic teeth, which is ideally suited for micro-stepping applications. Aside from the obvious increase in resolution resulting from increasing the steps per revolution to 25,600, micro-stepping also ensures smoother low speed motion by allowing the discrete 1.8º step size which produces mechanical noise to be reduced to much smaller steps with inherently lower resultant vibrational noise.
The DRV014 Stepper Motor drive has been equipped with a trapezoidal screw thread for a cleaner, more wear resistant operation. It is capable of driving loads as high as 55 lbs (25 kg). The use of a trapezoidal lead screw in the DRV014 provides a number of benefits over the more common Acme style thread, namely improved durability, a lower friction due to improved surface quality, and nearly no back-drive.
DC Servo Motor Drive These DC Servo Motor Actuators provide an alternative to the Stepper Motor Actuators above. The ball screw drive delivers highly reliable, low friction, 24/7 operation. They provide a load capacity of 55 lbs (25 kg) and are ideally suited for applications that require high-speed, precision motion control. Unlike trapezoidal lead screws, ball screws have rolling surfaces that wear less than sliding interfaces and are preloaded to eliminate backlash.
The design incorporates a 1024 lines (4096 effective) rotary encoder for accurate and repeatable positioning, especially when combined with the BDC100 series DC motor controller detailed below.
