Thorlabs' Implantable Fiber Optic Cannulae are ideal for use with our line of Optogenetics Equipment. They feature a Ø2.5 mm ferrule, Ø200 µm, Ø300 µm, or Ø400 µm core multimode fiber and are available with fiber lengths of 2, 5, 10, or 20 mm. Our cannulae can be surgically implanted using stereotactic guidance, and the stainless steel ferrule is easy to score for better adherance to the skull when implanted and fixated with glue. We also offer Cannulae with Ceramic Ferrules.

Our cannulae are compatible with our ADAF1 mating sleeve (see below) and lightweight optogenetics patch cables. Cannulae and patch cables with different ferrule materials can be mixed and matched without significant additional signal losses.

Fiber Core Size
Smaller core sizes are less invasive, making them ideal for smaller animals, such as mice. Larger core size cannulae offer a more robust solution for larger animals such as rats, as well as higher power light sources. Choose patch cables that match the core size and NA (numerical aperture) of your cannula for the highest light output at the cannula tip. Our patch cables specifically designed for optogenetics feature the same Ø2.5 mm ferrule as our cannulae on one end.

Thorlabs also manufactures custom fiber optic cannulae. We can provide different fiber and/or ferrule types as well as different fiber lengths. See the Custom Cannula tab for details.

Mating Sleeve and Patch Cable Compatibility
Our Ø2.5 mm ferrule cannulae are compatible with our ADAF1 mating sleeve (see below) and lightweight optogenetics patch cables. Cannulae and patch cables with different ferrule materials can be mixed and matched without introducing significant additional signal losses. However, fiber core sizes, numerical aperture (NA), and ferrule diameters should match for proper connection and maximum signal strength.

Custom patch cables can be shipped the same day provided the following criteria* are met:

  • Order Does Not Exceed 5 Cables
  • Each Cable Does Not Exceed a Length of 20 m
  • The Tolerance is ±1% or ±7 cm, Whichever is Greater**
  • The Order is Placed Before 2:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time)

ADAF1 Mating Sleeve with Ø2.5 mm Cannula and Patch Cable

The ADAF1 universal mating sleeve is perfect for connecting our optogenetics patch cables with ferrule connectors to our implantable fiber optic cannulae (see photo to the right). It is also capable of connecting any connectorized fiber with a Ø2.5 mm ferrule, including FC/PC, ST, and SC connectors. This zirconia sleeve is also ideal for temporary connection of two fiber optic cables, providing a simple, quick-release interconnect.

This mating sleeve is compatible with both stainless steel and ceramic patch cables and cannulae. Cannulae and patch cables with different ferrule materials can be mixed and matched without significant additional signal losses.
