Rigidity Many optical experiments require very accurate alignment of the optical axes and therefore necessitate a work surface that has low deformation under its own weight and the weight of the experiment. Rigidity is a function of its stiffness which is not just the thickness of the breadboard but its strength-to-weight ratio. Our breadboards feature a honeycomb structure sandwiched and bonded between two metal plates which give them a high strength-to-weight ratio. The differences in the construction of the boards, as shown below, vary the stiffness of the breadboard.
Dampening The breadboard is isolated from environmental vibrations, depending on the frame chosen, but it can experience vibration from devices in the setup. For low frequency vibration, commonly found in the lab, the stiffness of the work surface is primarily responsible for dampening effects. The differences in the construction of the boards, as shown below, vary the stiffness of the breadboard.
ScienceDesk Frames The ScienceDesk frame is a portable vibration-isolation platform. Every outside edge on the welded steel frame is rounded and the optical breadboard is inset in the ScienceDesk frame so that it is protected from incidental contact. The ScienceDesk frame is available in three different sized work surfaces and four vibration isolation options.
ScienceDesk Accessories The accessories for Thorlabs' ScienceDesk series workstations provide an array of custom configurations to meet almost any workspace requirement.
