Highly Doped Ytterbium Fibers

Thorlabs offers state-of-the-art ytterbium doped optical fibers for optical amplifiers, ASE light sources, and high-power pulsed and CW fiber laser applications. Neodymium doped fibers are available for custom orders. These fibers, manufactured by Liekki Ltd. in Finland, are fabricated using the latest doped fiber production technology – Liekki Direct Nanoparticle Deposition (DND). Applications in the fast growing fiber laser and high-power amplifier segments require short fiber lengths, flat refractive index profiles without core burnout, and large core-to-cladding ratio (large mode area double clad fibers). Liekki DND technology was designed with the requirements of these advanced fiber applications in mind.

Available Ytterbium Doped Fibers

The YB1200 family of highly doped ytterbium fibers is designed for fiber amplifiers, continuous wave (CW) and pulsed fiber lasers from mW to over 100W output power levels, operating in the 1µm wavelength region. These fibers, fabricated using Liekki Direct Nanoparticle Deposition (DND) technology, make it possible to reduce the required fiber lengths and to reduce nonlinear effects.

Production Notes

Liekki has stopped production of the following fibers due to concerns about photo darkening. However, they plan to reintroduce this fiber in the near future. According to the manufacturer there is a 1:1 relation to the amount of fiber required for the alternative fibers listed in the table below.

Liekki YB1200-4/125 is a highly doped ytterbium fiber for low noise, low nonlinearity preamplifiers and lasers. Its telecom like geometry makes the fiber compatible with low cost pump diodes and standard single mode passive fibers.

Liekki YB1200-6/125DC is a highly doped, single mode, double-clad fiber for medium-power fiber laser and amplifier applications. The fiber is compatible with many fiber-based components such as gratings and combiners.

Liekki YB1200-10/125DC is a highly doped, double-clad fiber for medium to high-power fiber laser and amplifier applications. The combination of high cladding absorption and a single mode core make the fiber ideal for compact fiber-based power amplifiers.

Liekki YB1200-20/400DC is a highly doped, double-clad fiber for high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers. The fiber combines a large core with excellent beam quality and a 400 μm cladding that is compatible with industry standard high-power pump lasers and delivery fibers.

Liekki YB1200-25/250DC is a highly doped, double-clad fiber featuring very high cladding absorption, high efficiency per application length, and excellent beam quality. The fiber is ideal for high average power pulsed fiber amplifiers.

Liekki YB2000-10/125 DC is a highly doped, photodarkening-resistant fiber suitable for low-power laser or amplifier applications.

Although the YB1200-6/125 is a double-clad fibre for cladding pumping, can it be used in a core-pumped laser. We are looking for a core-pumped Yb fibre with a slightly larger core area than the YB1200-4-125. The YB1200 name suggests the Yb ion concentration is the same. Is this correct and are all the Yb ions added to the core region as in the YB1200-4/125? Thanks, C.

Response from Tim at Thorlabs: The core is Yb doped and the cladding is Er doped. If you were to use it in a core-pumped laser, please note that the dopant concentration is not the same in the core for the two fibers. I will contact you to discuss this further.

Dear OFS, I am a PhD student at CREOL of UCF woring in Fiber Optics Lab. My current project is on the Solar energy utilizing at this point. At first, an active fiber would be my ideal candidate, for example Nd3+_doped fiber. Please tell me the following parameters on this type of Nd3+-doped fibe: (1)geometries, such as d_core/d_cladding (2)optical properties, such as OD/neff_core/neff_cladd/NA/V-number/MFD (3)doping concentration/level (4)absorption values(for example, White-light/Sunlight of 400nm~1800nm) (5)price/meter Actually, any information are more than welcome with details As much As possible. Features

Thorlabs offers a range of passive large-mode-area (LMA) fibers matched with available active LMA fibers such as Liekki's Yb1200 product family. These passive fibers are matched to the core diameters and numerical apertures of their active counterparts to maintain excellent beam quality throughout fiber laser or amplifier systems. The outer cladding diameter is designed to "round" the shaped active fibers, to achieve low pump coupling loss from passive to active fibers. The passive fibers are coated with low-index fluoroacrylate enabling active fibers to be pumped through them. High index acrylate coated fibers are available by special request; please contact your local technical support office for details.

The only difference is the cladding size is 123um instead of 125um.
