Thorlabs' Stackable Lens Tubes provide an easy and fast solution for assembly of an optical system with a single optical axis. Using lens tubes one can easily assemble several optical components on a common optical axis without the need for X-Y alignment of each component to the common axis. Thorlabs offers Ø1/2”, Ø1”, Ø2”, Ø30 mm, and Ø3” lens tubes, for use with different optics sizes, as well as adapters to convert between the four different sizes.

Lens Tubes Application Example

Thorlabs also offers many of our optical components in pre-mounted 1” lens tubes as well as specially developed components and mounts, all of which are pre-aligned to the optical axis, including:

Thorlabs has also added alignment tools for lens tubes for working with IR optics, such as infrared alignment disks and alignment targets. Additionally, with the use of retaining rings, any standard optical component can be easily mounted into the lens tubes.

For more complex optical systems Thorlabs has developed sets of post mounting rings, and mounting brackets and construction cubes to enable building complex, rugged systems.

Thorlabs lens tubes can also easily interface with our cage system components such as the cage plates, kinematic turning mirror mounts, pre-mounted beamsplitter cubes and pre-mounted turning mirrors.

Hallo, We will work on new drawings of the Iris Diaphragms right now. For SM1D12SZ the distance between the leaves is 2.35 mm. The distance from the mounting surface on the side with the external threads to the first set of leaves is 3 mm. Inge@thorlabs.com

Do you have a 3d solid model of the SM1D12SZ yet? Or can you tell me the location of the iris leaves relative to the mounting surface?

Lever-Activated Threaded Iris
Aperture Controlled by a Lever Activator
   Black Spring Steel Leaves

Our threaded lever-actuated iris diaphragms are continuously variable irises compatible with our SM05-, SM1-, SM2-, and SM3-threaded lens tubes (Ø1/2", Ø1", Ø2",and Ø3" ). Each iris has internal SM threading on one side and external SM threading on the other side. The individual black spring steel leaves pivot within the outer ring of the iris and are designed to last several thousand cycles.

Threaded Zero Aperture Iris
  Zero Minimum Aperture
  Ø12 mm Maximum Aperture
  SM1 Threaded

The dual leaf design of the SM1D12SZ allows the iris to be continuously varied from the maximum aperture diameter of 12 mm to completely closed (zero aperture). This iris also has internal SM1 threading on one side and external SM1 threading on the other, which makes the iris easy to integrate into an SM1 Lens Tube System. The iris leaves are made from black spring steel and the lever-actuated diaphragm is designed to provide smooth operation for several thousand cycles. An engraved arrow indicates the position the lever must be in to close the iris.

Threaded Stainless Steel Iris
Stainless Steel Leaves for High Power Applications
  SM1 Threaded
  Ø12.0 mm Maximum Aperture

The stainless steel leaves of the SM1D12SS iris allow it to be used in higher power applications than traditional spring steel irises. The aperture can be continuously varied from the maximum aperture diameter of 12 mm to a minimum aperture diameter of 0.9 mm. This iris also has internal SM1 threading on one side and external SM1 threading on the other, which makes the iris easy to integrate into an SM1 Lens Tube System. The lever-actuated diaphragm is designed to provide smooth operation for several thousand cycles. An engraved arrow indicates the position the lever must be in to close the iris.

* Please note that we use a magnetic stainless steel in this iris. Due to its hardness, it offers a longer lifetime than typical non-magnetic stainless steel.
