Thorlabs' instrumentation bases are designed to allow instruments or optical sensors, such as photodetectors, to be positioned temporarily into an optomechanical assembly. These bases essentially eliminate the need to securely fasten a base to an optical table. Additionally, the base provides a greater range of positional flexibility, as it does not require alignment with the standard hole pattern found on an optical table. After the mount is removed from a setup, the base can simply be placed elsewhere on the optical table or nearby shelf without requiring extra handling or storage precautions.

The PMB3 Base is a permanent magnetic version of our IB3 Instrumentation Base. The magnet is sufficiently strong to securely hold the base in place without clamping to an optical table. This base is only compatible with magnetic optical tables and breadboards. These are ideal for components which will temporarily be in a beam path, such as power meters.
