Internal to External Thread Adapters are Available in Two Styles

We offer adapters that feature internal and external threads, two sets of internal threads, or two sets of external threads.

Internal to external thread-to-thread adapters are either machined with both threads inline (type 1) or with the two threads connected by a flange (type 2, as shown in the diagram to the right). Type 1 adapters may be positioned anywhere along a threaded tube, while type 2 adapters can only be placed at the end. See the "Adapter Profile" column in the tables below for information on the construction style of each adapter.

Thermally Insulating Adapters
Adapters whose item numbers end in TS are thermally insulating adapters, constructed of black delrin rather than aluminum. These adapters are useful in situations where heat transfer between components could be a problem, such as camera sensors, whose noise increases with temperature. We currently offer thermally insulating adapters with RMS, C-Mount, and SM1 threads. See the Thermal Isolation tab above for more details and test data.

Thermal Stability of Al and Delrin Adapters

Thermal Insulation Experiment

An experiment was conducted to compare the thermal isolation of our thermally insulating adapters (SM1A4TS, SM1A9TS, SM1A3TS, and SM1A10TS) presented at the bottom of this page with that of our traditional aluminum adapters. During the experiment, an aluminum adapter and a thermally isolating black delrin adapter were each used to connect two lens tubes. Then, one of the lens tubes was externally heated to 60 oC using a foil heating element that had been attached to that lens tube’s outer surface.

During the heating process, simultaneous temperature readings were recorded in 30 second intervals for both the heated and unheated lens tube in each system. The measured results are shown in the plot to the right. From the graph, it is clearly evident that there is far less heat transfer when using one of our thermally isolating adapters to connect two lens tubes than exists when using an aluminum adapter.

Hi, I am looking for a part similar to the SM1A9, but with both camera and SM1 tube threads external. We have actually had and used two parts just like this but need more now. I am sure we got them bundled with the CMOS cameras we bought from you but I just cannot find this part listed separately. Tony

Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. We do not have a single adapter which has external threads for both C-Mount and SM1, but if you thread an SM1T2 lens tube coupler into the SM1A9 adapter, you can create the desired adapter.

Id just like to comment on the SM1A12. It would be nice if you could increase the length of the M25 threading, since Nikon objectives do not seat properly. I have to have the machine shop here modify these, which is a pain.

Please consider adding adapters to this range to cover more of the filter threads used by your C-mount camera lenses, e.g. M27 x 0.5 which is used by a number of the Navitar lenses. Adaptors between these threads and SM1 (at least) would be useful for integrating cameras into lens tube and cage mount based optical systems. Your DCU and DCC cameras are small and light enough to be mounted via the lens in this way, and it can often be convenient to do so.

The TS Series of Thermally Insulating Thread Adapters has been designed to minimize the thermal link between SM1-threaded and RMS- or C-Mount-threaded components. Three machined contact pads, which are strategically located on each interface of the adapter, eliminate any direct thermal link between the mounted components. This feature, coupled with the low thermal conductivity of black Delrin, provides significantly less heat transfer between components. Please see the Thermal Insulation tab for more details on the performance of this series of adapters.
