Lab Jack Series

Laboratory jacks provide a rugged, height adjustable platform ideal for mounting optomechanical sub-assemblies that, as a functional group, require height adjustment. In order to address a wide range of requirements, Thorlabs offers three different models, each with unique design characteristics suited for different ranges of end applications.

L490 Heavy Duty Lab Jack
The dual pantograph design of the L490 offers excellent rigidity and platform parallelism. The large 4" (100 mm) x 7" (180 mm) mounting platform supports up to 75 lbs (34 kg) with a smooth vertical adjustment range of 2.2" (56 mm) supported by stainless steel axles and connecting rods. Both the top and bottom plates offer a generous array of 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped holes and clearance slots for general mounting requirements.

L200 Mini Lab Jack
The L200 is designed with the same rigid dual pantograph design of our popular L490 above. The small design and array of 4-40 (M3) mounting holes makes it an ideal addition to our Mini-Series Construction products. The 3" (76 mm) x 4" (102 mm) mounting platform supports up to 50 lbs (22 kg) with a smooth vertical adjustment range of 1.03" (26.2 mm). Both top and bottom plates offer a wide range of mounting holes including 4-40 (M3), 8-32 (M4), and 1/4"-20 (M6) for general mounting requirements (see Support Drawing for more details).

LJ750 Compact Lab Jack
The LJ750 offers 1" (25 mm) of precision vertical adjustment in a compact, easy-to-operate design. The large actuator ring, graduated in 10 μm intervals, offers high sensitivity even when actuating its maximum load of 200 lbs (90 kg). The top platform offers an additional functionality with lockable, 360º continuously rotation.

The L490/M includes 19 M6 mounting holes manufactured with 25 mm spacing. The tapped holes each include a positional tolerance that would allow the spacing to range between 24.87 mm to 25.13 mm. Our apologies, but our supporting documentation is currently inaccurate and will be updated shortly. Thank you for pointing out this inconsistency, and please note that the L490/M will suit your application.

This product would be very useful to our company if it is really "METRIC" as it is mentioned in short description of L490/M: "The top and bottom plates each have an array of nineteen 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped mounting holes on 1" (25 mm) centers." However one can see 25.4 mm spacing between tapped mounting holes. Please clarify is it possible to order L490/M with 25.0 mm spacing?

Response from Tim at Thorlabs: Thank you for contacting us. The L490 uses anodized aluminum and stainless steel almost exclusively. There are, however, a few steel components which may not be stainless. I am checking into this and will contact you with more details.

Is the L490 completely made of stainless materials? I would like to use it in an environment with a high humidity.

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to eliseo: we currently do not offer a vacuum-compatible version of the L200 labjack. There is not only grease, but other components that would require a redesign of the assembly in order to make the L200 vacuum compatibe (~10^-6 Torr). Alternatively, I would suggest looking at our LNR series stainless steel stages. We could customize its mounting accesories for use in vacuum environments. I will contact you with more details.

Do you have any experience in making the L200 UHV compatible? Would it be feasible to scrub out the lithium grease and replace with vacuum grease?

A response from Adam at Thorlabs to rick: This is a very interesting application and we would like some more information. I will email you directly to get this information. With respect to the grease, the L490 uses Apiezon grease while the L200 uses white lithium for moving parts and a combination of Apiezon grease with NYE PG-44A grease.

I have an application for the L490 and or L200. The lab jacks would be used in a radioactive hot cell. That only causes problems if some kind of solid bearing material is used. Most lubricants are Ok, if one is used; I need to run it through our system.Your help will be appreciated. rick

A response from Adam at Thorlabs, Inc to Dan: I am sorry about the issue with our step files. We will update the web and send you out an accurate step file.

The STEP file thats available for L200 is flawed in a subtle but serious way. The hole spacings on the top and bottom plates are incorrect in one dimension. The holes, as modeled, are on a 1" x 25mm grid!

Clamping Arms
  • Provides Clamping Force for Our Mounts
  • Stackable 6-32 (M4) Threads on Top and Bottom of Post
  • PM3(/M): Holds Optics up to 0.97" (24.6 mm) Tall
  • PM4(/M): Holds Optics up to 1.61" (40.9 mm) Tall

Thorlabs' PM3(/M) and PM4(/M) Clamping Arms use a nylon-tipped setscrew to secure objects in our mounts and V-clamps. The PM3(/M) provides vertical travel of up to 0.97" (24.6 mm) and features a 0.69" (17.5 mm) long clamping arm. In contrast, the PM4(/M) provides vertical travel of up to 1.61" (40.9 mm) and features a 1.16" (29.3 mm) long clamping arm.

The clamping arm is held to the post using a flexure mechanism that locks with a 5/64" (2 mm) balldriver or hex key. The post includes a Ø0.09" (Ø2.3 mm) through hole that provides added torque when tightening down the post.

The PM3(/M) clamping arm can be used to hold 1" (25.4 mm) tall optics with the addition of a second post. Without the second post, the top surface of the clamping arm will be positioned above the top of the post, causing less-than-full engagement of the flexure mechanism.
