Thorlabs' Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) Line Camera has several advantages over its area-array counterparts, including a high optical linear resolution that allows system developers to use the cameras to capture 2D images by moving either the object or the CCD perpendicular to the scan line. In the past, the lack of high-speed camera interfaces limited the choice to gray-scale line cameras. To overcome this obstacle, Thorlabs introduced the LC1-USB line camera, a cost-effective black and white line camera based on a single-line, 3000 pixel CCD chip with a USB2.0 (480 Mb/s) and USB1.1 (12 Mb/s) interface. The LC1-USB is a compact, plug-and-play, linear camera that is ideal for a variety of applications in industry process control, optics, biology, spectroscopy, and reflection imaging. The camera is based on a linear CCD array housed in a 3.6" x 2.6" x 1.0" enclosure. Setting up the LC1-USB Line Camera is very easy; the user simply installs the latest version of the operating software onto any desktop or notebook PC and then connects the USB cable from the line camera to the PC, eliminating the need for installing a DAQ card.

The LC1-USB accepts the NFMLC1 F-Mount adapter for standard camera objective adoption. It also has #4-40 tapped holes at the front plate for easy adaptation to Thorlabs' 30 mm Cage Assemblies, which allows the user to integrate optical components in front of the camera. The unit also has #8-32 and M4 tapped holes to provide stable and secure mounting.

The CCD Line Cameras feature a complete software package. It offers a new look and several new features like zooming and absorbance, transmittance and relative difference measurements.

The software offers a dynamic and flexible solution for laboratory and manufacturing applications. On a single graph, the data, background, and peaks can be shown. With the help of smoothing and averaging algorithms, the user is able to enhance interesting features of the spectra. Drivers for NI LabWindows/CVI™ and NI LabVIEW™ programming environments as well as for MS C++™ and Borland C++™ compilers are included.

The LC1-USB CCD Line Camera features an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The software offers dynamic and flexible solutions for laboratory and manufacturing applications. On a single graph, the data, background, and peaks can be shown. With the help of smoothing and averaging algorithms, the user is able to enhance interesting features of the spectra. Furthermore, the software is able to handle several devices at one time which are presented in different windows.

Additionally, Thorlabs provides drivers for NI LabWindows/CVI™ and NI LabVIEW™ programming environments as well as for MS C++™ and Borland C++™ compilers for more specific demands.

Data Processing

The software offers the possibility to load stored data for comparison. This data can be used to calculate and show the absorbance, transmittance or relative difference view.

Customer wants to collect 3000 pixel data in 0.1 sec and 3 second consecutively, how can he do it? " You certainly want to save these collected data. So this can be done only if you write your own application (we provide LabVIEW drivers on the SPLICCO CD ROM).

    I would like to be able to grab and store 20 or more sequential frames with this camera, but the included software will only average multiple frames. Can you provide an update to the software that will enable this feature?

    Im using a LC1-USB camera with your previous software (USB line camera software revision 1.00) and what i get, when i use the camera, is a negative value of background. The problem is that the minimum value for intensity in the chart is 0, so I cant read anything except pixel where there is a lot of intensity! For instance, if I put a light in front of the camera, the camera is saturated. Thne i move away thelight, the signal is decreasing and it finally goes bellow zero and I dont find any way to see it again (the programm does not accept negative value for the y axis)!. Can you give me a hint to solve this problem?

    A response from Juergen at Thorlabs to mpetersen123: I am sorry - we cannot provide this information. 1) The concersion from intensity into light flux or light flux density is not simple at all - there is the sensitivity curve of human eye behind and spatial angle of emission - the latter is unknown. 2) LC1-USB: We cannot calibrate a CCD vs. wavelength nor for optical power vs. Intensity and integration time.

    I purchased the LC1-USB line camera and it is working well and I want to also use it to measure LUX or Lumens. It seems as though it should be a simple conversion to go from the intensity readout and convert to LUX (after taking into account the integration time). Can you provide this information?
