Introduction The ECL5000D is an External Cavity Laser (ECL) Module for the TXP Platform that utilizes Thorlabs' patented ECL Technology providing high stability, high output power, and smooth, continuous tuning through a 110nm tuning range. Based on the Thorlabs PICOD Series Tunable Laser; this ECL is available as a plug-and-play benchtop unit (ECL5000DT) in a rugged TXP5004 chassis, or as a module (ECL5000D) compatible with our TXP5000 Test & Measurement Platform.
This microprocessor controlled laser provides both Digital and Analog Modes of Control. In the analog mode, the wavelength and power can be controlled by applying a voltage to the front input connectors. This can be a DC voltage for step control or a modulated signal for sweeping either the wavelength, the power, or both. The digital control is achieved through the USB interface. The easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) offers three operating modes right out of the box:
Fixed Wavelength Mode for Setting Constant Wavelengths
Step Tuning for Switching between Constant Wavelengths
Sweep Tuning for Operation with Continuous Wavelength Changes
LabVIEW™ and LabWindows™ drivers enable an easy and flexible integration of the ECL5000 with other equipment.
The 'Sweep Control' Panel The graphical window above shows the time-behavior of the laser wavelength. All parameters can be set in the display fields. The sweep mode can be run once (triggered or un-triggered) or continuously. The sweep control panel offers a graphical representation of the sweep, seven numerical input fields, one checkbox, and three operating buttons. In the first two numerical fields the start and target wavelength of the sweep are entered. For a sweep from lower to higher wavelengths, the start wavelength is set lower than the stop wavelength, and vice-versa for a decreasing wavelength sweep. In the third field the desired output power is entered. The lower four input fields determine the rise and fall time of the wavelength scan as well as the dwell time of the upper and lower wavelengths.
Hold Start Wavelength: The time the laser stays on the start wavelength
Ramp Forward: Rise time for the wavelength to reach the target wavelength
Hold Target Wavelength: The time the laser stays on the target wavelength
Ramp Return: Fall time for the laser wavelength to reach the start wavelength again
The checkbox ‘Symmetry On’ allows for a symmetrical scan behavior, that means the times for ‘Hold Start Wavelength’ and ‘Ramp Forward’ are the same as for ‘Hold Target Wavelength’ and ‘Ramp Return’.
Graphical User Interface for Step Mode
The "Step Control" Panel The step control panel offers a graphical representation of the step-scan, five numerical input fields and four operating buttons. In the first two numerical fields the start- and stop wavelength of the step scan is entered. For an increasing wavelength sweep, the start wavelength is lower than the stop wavelength, and vice-versa for a decreasing sweep. In the third field the desired output power is entered. The fourth button allows you to define the step-size in nm. The fifth button (Dwell time) represents the time that the laser wavelength is kept constant for every step.
Continuous / Single: Select between a single wavelength scan and a continuous scan, i.e. if the laser has reached the stop-wavelength, it jumps automatically to the start-wavelength again and starts a new scan cycle. If started, the corresponding button text changes to ‘Stop’ to halt the scan and reset the laser to the start wavelength.
Pause: Interrupts a running scan.
Continue: Continues a paused scan.
Step: In a paused scan you can jump manually to the next step and hold there.
The Software Package for the TXP5000 Platform contains the Software Modules for the ECL5000D Series
The available software is organized into the following categories:
Applications: Standard application software packages and graphical user interfaces. This is what most users need to operate the device for typical applications.
Drivers: Instrument drivers for the National Instruments™, LabWindows™/CVI, and LabVIEW™ development environments. These are intended for developers who want to extend or adapt the functionality of the device to their special requirements.
Firmware: Low level software for the internal operation of the device. This should be updated to the newest version available to guarantee optimal performance. Please see the Operating Manual for information on how to update the firmware of your device.
